Also taught to keep emotions in check, yes really and that is why you may see comments about back in the day and I did not harp, just stating a fact in my own life, Children were to be seen and not heard and that's the way it was. If they need to climb up trees they can, but then again, I’ve never seen a cat in constant pain because of Being de-clawed.
