Patrick Noel Tio what you've described is actually a whole separate issue here in the US: over breeding of pet animals. Everyone and their mother thinks they're entitled to breed and sell their pets. They take potential customers away from shelters and they add to the problem by creating more and more animals to end up in the shelter. Everyone immediately jumps up to say "not my animals" but yes, your animals too. I believe the statistic is at least one kitten from every litter born will either end up feral or in a shelter. Nicest mean teacher ever shirt. So yes, our pet population is ridiculous but allowing people to amputate parts of their cat is not going to fix that problem. The only way to lessen the number of cats getting killed in shelters is for people to be responsible and spay/neuter without ever breeding. Nicest mean teacher ever shirt. Be proactive. Get scratching posts, teach them what you expect from them. They are trainable. They are intelligent creatures. I've had success teaching my cats not to scratch furniture. How about training your cats not to scratch furniture? It's not hard. It's like house training a puppy. I have two cats that stay inside and three that go in and out as they please. None of them scratch. They tried to as kittens but we trained them not to. They have toys and scratch posts to play with.

One day before I dropped off my cat at my friend's place for a trip, I stopped at a pet store to get cat nail tip covers for my cat. The store clerk said I should consider declawing as she did on her cat. I said no it's very cruel and damaging operation on cats. Her response was "oh I found a very good vet to do it for mine". Amputation is amputation no matter how expensive your vets charge you. Have any numbers to support that? Based on anecdotal experience, even on this thread, would be owners would be turned off by a cat with claws. So in the logical diagram of things: owners that support claws will own any shelter cat. Owners that do not support claws won't own a cat with claws. Therefore there will be more strays with claws than not. Correct my logic and I'll support your side.
